A household emergency plan is a written, actionable strategy that ensures everyone in your home knows what to do, where to go, and how to communicate during a disaster. It is a proactive approach to managing crises—such as wildfires, floods, earthquakes, or house fires—by planning in advance rather than reacting in panic.
Ready.gov recommends making a plan because families may not be together when a disaster happens.
Key elements of a comprehensive plan include:
Communication Methods: A plan for how to connect if family members are separated, such as designating an out-of-area contact person (who is often easier to reach during local network outages) and relying on text messages rather than voice calls.
Meeting Places: Two designated meeting spots: one right outside the home for sudden emergencies (e.g., fire) and one outside the neighborhood if evacuation is required.
Evacuation Routes: Identifying multiple, safe ways out of your home and neighborhood.
Essential Information: A documented list of emergency contacts (police, fire, doctors, school) and vital records (insurance, IDs) stored in a safe, accessible place.
Household Needs & Pets: Tailored plans for children, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and pets.
Utility Shut-offs: Knowledge of how to safely turn off water, gas, and electricity.

In this workshop, we use AI as an organizing assistant. It can help you gather information, think through household needs, turn official preparedness guidance into plain language, draft checklists, and identify missing pieces in your plan.
AI does not replace Ready.gov, local emergency guidance, or human judgment. It helps organize the work so the plan is easier to complete, review, print, and share.
AI can make mistakes. It may give outdated information, invent details, miss local risks, or sound more certain than it should.
That is why we do not use AI as the final authority. In this workshop, AI helps draft and organize your plan, but people verify the plan using official sources and local guidance.
We also avoid putting unnecessary private information into AI tools. The goal is a practical plan, not oversharing personal details.
Because this is real enough to matter, but structured enough to practice safely.
A household emergency plan gives us a clear, useful task. We can see where AI helps, where it might make mistakes, and where a human needs to check the work.
That makes it a strong beginner-friendly way to learn AI safety: use AI for support, compare it against trusted sources, protect personal information, and make sure a human stays responsible for the final plan.
